TWI CEO Caroline Gumble Visits JCB

Wed, 03 September, 2025

TWI CEO, Caroline Gumble was invited to visit JCB’s global headquarters in Rocester, UK, as well as the JCB Power Systems facility near Derby, UK.

JCB have been valued Industrial Members of TWI since 1983 and are this year celebrating their 80th year in business. Accompanied by TWI’s Group Manager for Strategic Programmes, Alec Gunner, Caroline was able to further strengthen our links with JCB.

As one of the largest privately-owned engineering and manufacturing companies in the UK, JCB is the world’s third-largest manufacturer of construction machinery. Maintaining a global presence that spans four continents, JCB employ over 19,000 people worldwide to build a broad range of machines for sectors including construction, defence, waste recycling and agriculture.

We have worked with JCB on a number of projects over the years, including an Innovate UK-supported initiative, alongside Tata Steel, to develop new designs and associated manufacturing methods for lighter weight, next generation off-highway vehicles. These lighter weights were introduced to improve operating efficiencies and productivity while reducing the environmental impact of the vehicles.

Our work with JCB has allowed us to invite their executives to our headquarters near Cambridge to discuss fabrication processes and to investigate arc, laser and friction welding capabilities as well as R&D and training opportunities.

TWI has also worked to support organisations who themselves work with JCB, such as Permoid Industries Ltd, who we assisted with an analysis of debris from fuel tanks they manufacture for JCB. This included the analysis of different types of particle and their source, including chemical composition and proportions, before suggesting methods to reduce particulate matter.

Caroline’s visit to JCB is one of several she is making to our Industrial Member companies since starting her role as CEO of TWI, where she will align the capabilities available at TWI with the needs of our valued Members.
