New Hydrogen Measurement Capabilities Launched

TWI is pleased to announce the commissioning of a new gas analyser system, the Bruker G8 Galileo, with a coupled mass spectrometer capable of thermal desorption mass spectroscopy (TDMS).

This state-of-the-art system enables high-precision measurement of hydrogen content and trapping in metallic materials, supporting research into hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms and hydrogen–material interactions. With this new capability, we strengthen our ability to provide industry-leading insights into hydrogen behaviour at both the laboratory and applied engineering scale.

About the Bruker G8 Galileo

The Bruker G8 Galileo is a state-of-the-art system designed for the precise measurement of oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, and argon in solid materials. It is the first one in the UK that is equipped with a mass spectrometer and external infrared furnace, offering comprehensive gas analysis capabilities.

Features and Benefits:

  • Advanced nondispersive infrared (NDIR), thermal conductivity detector (TCD), and MS detectors enable sub-ppm to ppb level detection
  • Direct and unaltered gas measurements for high analytical precision
  • Precise sample temperature monitoring to ensure consistent sample conditions
  • Enhanced sample loading, cleaning, and calibration processes

  • Accurate oxygen and nitrogen determination for steel and alloy production
  • Measurement of oxygen and hydrogen for copper, aluminium, and magnesium production to prevent embrittlement
  • Stringent control of hydrogen uptake in titanium/zirconium alloys and magnetic materials to prevent embrittlement in critical applications
  • Diffusible hydrogen analysis to support the latest advances in additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy, coating technologies, and welding processes

  • Smart Molecule SequenceTM for direct measurement of gases and real-time 1:1 information
  • FusionControl enables accurate temperature monitoring of the sample
  • ESD 1000 Element Specific Detector (Mass Spectrometer) for rapid and accurate determination of hydrogen and argon in metals
  • IR tube furnace for reliable measurements of diffusible, residual, and total hydrogen concentrations (compliant with ISO 360 and AWS A4.3 standards for welding)
