Meet TWI Technology Fellow, Colin Ribton

TWI Technology Fellow, Colin Ribton has been working with electron beam technology at TWI since 1985.

Respected in his field, Colin is a Chartered Physicist, a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, having graduated from the University of Nottingham with a joint honours degree in Pure and Applied Physics before gaining his PhD from Brunel University on the ‘Development of an Electron Beam Gun Design Optimisation Methodology.’

Colin’s work on electron beam gun design has been published widely and he is the inventor /co-inventor for several granted patents, including an array probe device for measuring electron beam intensity and an RF excited plasma gun.

He has been involved in breakthroughs including the first ever autonomous electron beam weld conducted in space and is a member of the organising committee of the Electron Beam Technologies biannual conference.

Like all of our Technology Fellows, Colin was selected for the position by the TWI Executive Team in recognition of his knowledge and experience. He has made a significant impact through his technical excellence, expertise and knowledge transfer as well as showing a commitment to developing and coaching colleagues, passing his knowledge on to the next generation of TWI experts.

Colin’s research has been widely published, including in several TWI Industrial Member reports for projects that he has been actively involved in.
