We are pleased to announce that papers from TWI’s Friction Stir Welding Symposium are now available to read online.
Papers from the 13 symposia to have been held since 1999 have now been uploaded so that you can see the growth of research in this area over the past 26 years.
The first symposium was held in 1999 in Thousand Oaks, USA before taking place in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2000 and Kobe, Japan in 2001. In 2003, the event took place in Park City, USA and in 2004 it was held in Metz, France. Following this, the event moved to a biennial format, taking place in Saint-Sauveur in Canada in 2006, Awaji Island, Japan in 2008, Timmendorfer Strand in Germany in 2010, Huntsville, USA in 2012, Beijing, China in 2014, Cambridge, UK in 2016 and Quebec, Canada in 2018. Unfortunately, the symposium had to be postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but started again in 2024, when the event was held in Kyoto, Japan.
Papers from all of these events are now available to read online, here:

International Friction Welding Conference 2026
The International Symposium on Friction Stir Welding returns to Cambridge, UK in 2026, taking place at TWI’s headquarters from 19-21 May, as part of the International Friction Welding Conference (IFWC).
This newly combined international event has been designed for researchers, engineers and industry professionals with an interest in friction welding. IFWC 2026 will combine the 14th International Symposium on Friction Stir Welding and the 6th International Symposium on Linear Friction Welding, covering a broad range of friction joining and processing techniques.
While maintaining the strong sense of community and technical depth that the International Symposium on Friction Stir Welding is known for, IFWC will now also include sessions on a wider range of friction welding technologies—bringing together specialists from across the entire field.
The programme has been designed to encourage meaningful cross-disciplinary exchange, with shared coffee breaks, lunches, and a joint social event offering ample opportunity to connect with colleagues from both established and emerging areas.
