Call for Papers: International Friction Welding Conference

Tue, 05 August, 2025

We are pleased to announce that we are accepting abstract submissions for the International Friction Welding Conference (IFWC) taking place at TWI Cambridge on 19-21 May, 2026.

This newly-established event brings together two leading symposia - the 14th International Symposium on Friction Welding and the 6th International Symposium on Linear Friction Welding – to create a unique international forum for professionals from academia and industry to share and develop scientific and technical knowledge across all friction processes.

The event includes three days of technical presentations, poster sessions, and informal opportunities for knowledge exchange and networking. There will also be a social event and conference dinner at the iconic Imperial War Museum, Duxford, providing a memorable setting for you to connect with peers from across the friction welding community.

Submissions

Paper submissions should be around 300 words in length and include the full title of the paper along with the names, affiliations, email addresses, and full mailing addresses of all authors. We would also ask you to provide your preferred presentation format (oral or poster) as well as a clear overview of the background, objectives, methodology, and key results of the work. The official language of the conference is English, so please ensure submissions are in English.

We invite papers related to all friction processes, including but not limited to:

  • Friction Stir Welding (FSW)
  • Rotary Friction Welding (RFW)
  • Linear Friction Welding (LFW)
  • Friction Stir Processing (FSP)
  • Friction Stir Channelling (FSC)
  • Friction Stir Additive

Any submissions should present new developments in science, technology, applications, industrialisation, performance, quality, design, or any topic relevant to the advancement of friction welding and processing.

Example topics include:

  • Microstructural and Mechanical Properties
  • Numerical Modelling and Simulation
  • Non-Destructive Testing and Inspection
  • Industrial Applications and Case Studies
  • Joint Design, Performance, and Qualification

Each presenting author can submit up to three abstracts. The deadline for submission is 28 November 2025, and notification of acceptance will be communicated by 16 January 2026. Once accepted, we will require the final papers by 24 April, 2026. Please note the paper will be free-to-access in May 2027 through TWI’s Digital Library.

Submissions will undergo peer review to check for clear evidence of progress in an aspect of friction welding, relevance to industrial or academic challenges and that the content is largely unpublished previously.

Those authors of accepted papers will be expected to attend the event and present their work. A visa support letter can be provided upon request to assist with international travel planning.

We also welcome innovative ideas for how research and developments can be presented and discussed, including workshops, panels, or demonstrations. If you have suggestions, please contact the conference organiser, Rosie Mellor - rosie.mellor@twi.co.uk.

Registration

Registration for the event is now open, with an early bird rate on offer for early bookings. Registration fees cover refreshments and lunches, the conference dinner at the Imperial War Museum, a set of proceedings from the conference, a tour of TWI's facilities, and technology demonstrations.
