TWI has been working as part of the FORGE project consortium to develop novel compositionally complex alloys for a sustainable industrial future. A smart coatings system is being developed within the scope of FORGE project, and process parameters optimised for the deposition of compositionally complex alloys and rare-earth materials on carbon steel substrates.
The project team have investigated cold spray and laser cladding coating processes for the deposition of materials, with project work taking place to optimise the microstructure of these innovative smart coating systems. The process parameters have been adjusted to minimise defects and improve the mechanical properties, including wear resistance and toughness.
The team behind this H2020-funded project held a webinar on 15 February 2023 to discuss some of this work and a recording of the online event is now available to watch.
TWI senior project leader, Dr Dibakor Boruah presented on the topic of, ‘Smart coating system for wear and damage monitoring,’ while Dario Porchetta of Tailorlux GmbH presented on the subject of, ‘Development and characterisation of optical tracers for smart coating.’
