Two New Engineering Scholarship Students Join TWI

Tue, 25 April, 2023

TWI is committed to diversity and inclusion and developing the future engineering workforce through investment in STEM education and outreach programmes.

The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is one of the many STEM programmes TWI has been a proud sponsor of for a number of years and we are delighted to announce we have welcomed two new Arkwright Scholars for 2022-2024.

Arkwright Engineering Scholarships are nationally-recognised across the UK and designed to inspire students to pursue their dreams and change the world as a future leader in engineering. The Scholarships are awarded to exceptionally talented 16-year-old students who will benefit from working with engineering sponsor organisations like TWI, to support their development and future career aspirations.

As a sponsor, we provide valuable hands-on work experience to the scholars during dedicated project weeks each year. We also keep in regular contact with the scholars during the 2-year period, providing mentoring and answering any technical and/or career questions they may have. We value the relationships we build with our scholars and look to maintain contact with them after the scholarship ends and provide any further support if asked, and if we are able to do so.

The latest scholars to join us are Cecily Taras from The Perse School in Cambridge and Monty Drewett from Oundle Sixth Form in Peterborough.

Cecily studies A Levels in Computer Science, Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics. Cecily has been interested in computing science and programming from a young age and started learning Python at just 9 years old. Cecily is part of the engineering club at her school and enjoys discussing engineering problems and finding solutions to them with her peers. Cecily has gained exposure to different engineering disciplines by attending engineering summer schools. After completing her A Levels, Cecily is looking to study general engineering, aerospace engineering or physics at university.

Monty studies A Levels in Design Engineering, Mathematics and Physics. Monty has a passion for aerodynamics within motorsport and explores this in his own time by using Solidworks to learn about the core principles of aerodynamics and through his work experience as a volunteer mechanic for a racing team who are 2022 Radical World Champions. After completing his A Levels, Monty would like to study aeronautical engineering at university with a view to a career as an aerodynamicist.

On 28 February, the scholars visited TWI Cambridge for the first time and received an induction and tour of the site from Matthew Haslett, Team Leader – Environment (Fatigue Integrity Management Section) and Catherine Moulsher, Talent and Development Team Manager (People and Culture). On the afternoon of the visit, the scholars put their problem solving skills into action and completed an air crash investigation exercise.

Cecily and Monty will return to TWI in August to carry out a project week, where they will get experience of the type of work that TWI conducts for its Industrial Members.

We would like to welcome Cecily and Monty to TWI and look forward to working with them.
