We hosted a webinar related to the GeoSmart geothermal project on 22 March 2023. The popular online event was presented by Mechanical Engineering Professor Dr Derek K Baker of Middle East Technical University (METU) on the topic of, ‘Opportunities and Challenges for Hybridization of Geothermal.’
The event included findings from both the GeoSmart and the CST4ALL projects as it investigated the hybridisation of geothermal power plant resources with solar and or biomass power production.
This hybridisation can help make use of excess geothermal power block capacities to deliver additional ‘green’ heat. However, there are challenges around aligning the different characteristics of existing geothermal plants with biomass or concentrating solar thermal (CST) systems.
Identifying and exploiting current research and innovation to locate operational synergies between these different clean energy technologies, creates the opportunity for collaborative follow-up activities to be catalysed.
