TWI Seeks Medical Device for Important AM Work

Mon, 28 September, 2020

TWI is calling on the medical sector for assistance with a new project to respond to the disruption caused by COVID-19.

Manufacturing industries have faced disruption as a result of the ongoing pandemic, yet there remains a need to manufacture critical medical instruments in short lead times.

To help address this problem, TWI has joined a new Innovate UK-funded project to deliver business continuity using Additive Manufacturing and digital technologies to operate equipment remotely via an agnostic remote control hub (RCH). The Remote Additive Manufacturing Control for Uninterrupted Facility Management (RAM-Ctrl) project aims to develop a scalable central control platform (CCP) to manage multiple AM systems from different machine manufacturers.

TWI is currently searching for a test case and is calling on the medical industry to assist. We are seeking the STL or CAD files for a medical product that we can manufacture remotely from titanium (Ti 6/4) in order to test this new, remote additive manufacturing concept.

The part can be either an old patent or a new product and, in return, TWI will manufacture an extra test part for the medical supplier to keep, free of charge. In addition, we can either promote your assistance or keep it confidential as you request.

We only require one test piece at this time, so we will choose the most appropriate device for manufacture for the purposes of this project.

Please contact us, below, if you think you can help and we will be more than happy to discuss the requirements.

Thank-you in advance for your assistance in this important work.
