Scottish Sea Farms Personnel Pass Plastics Course

Wed, 12 August, 2020

Six welders from Scottish Sea Farms have successfully passed a CSWIP Hot Gas and Extrusion Welding in Polyethylene training course with TWI.

Our plastics welding training and certification is aligned to the British and European standard for approval testing of plastics welders (BS EN 13067), meaning that the certified trainees can be sure of their knowledge and competence following the course.

The four-day course was delivered at Scottish Sea Farms’ site in Kirkwall and included a mixture of theoretical and practical training ahead of an examination.

The training included standards, health and safety, an introduction to welding, information on plastics welding, processing and extrusion, plastics materials, welding quality and procedures, destructive and non-destructive testing, and visual inspection of welded systems.

All of the welders passed all of the categories within the course and are now qualified to put their training into practice for their work at Scottish Sea Farms.

Myles Heward, Engineering and Logistics Manager for Orkney, said the additional skills gained by the engineering team would result in a faster turnaround on boat repairs.

“This training and certification process with a world renowned welding institute has been a fantastic opportunity for the engineering department,” he said.

“Orkney has a fleet of plastic boats and the certification will help the team execute repairs to the highest standard, while minimising downtime and costs.

“We can hand the boats back to our farmers as quickly as possible so they can carry on with the day job, farming top quality salmon.”

Scottish Sea Farms has been farming salmon for more than four decades and has established a worldwide reputation for its superior seafood.

The company has farms across Scotland, from the west coast to the Orkney and Shetland Islands, rearing fish that is 100 per cent Scottish for customers at home and abroad.
