Recording available for TWI’s Timber Welding Webinar

Thu, 29 October, 2020

Last month, TWI were delighted to host a webinar titled ‘Development of a Rapid Timber Joining Technique’ in collaboration with University of Cambridge.

In the webinar, Dr Kate Franklin (Senior Project Leader – Friction and Forge Processes, TWI) and Dr Darshil Shah (Lecturer – Dept of Architecture, University of Cambridge) unveiled a novel timber joining process which doesn’t require mechanical fasteners, adhesives or curing.

Having explored the process in previous years, recent developments have proved promising with strong bonds achieved in moments, typically less than ten seconds from start to finish.

With significant interest from the timber and construction sector, we received many technical questions during the webinar. If you missed it live on 16 September, the recording is available now to watch at your convenience.

TWI continues its collaboration with the University of Cambridge on this topic; at present they are investigating the weldability of dissimilar woods, and attempting to join new materials such as bamboo.
