New Surface Engineering Apprenticeship Launched

Tue, 29 September, 2020

The Surface Engineering Leadership Forum (SELF), of which TWI is a part, has launched a new apprenticeship for post-graduate engineers to learn specialised skills related to surface engineering and coatings, heat treatments and surface treatments. The level 7 apprenticeship is being offered by fellow SELF team members, Cranfield University.

This new apprenticeship follows the development of a series of apprenticeship standards by the SELF team and is due to launch in January 2021. The 30 month, part time course will include taught modules, group and individual project, and case studies, all followed by an end-point assessment.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic it is yet to be decided whether the taught sessions will take place at the University or via electronic distance learning. In either case, the sessions will be delivered by high ranking industry professionals and senior academics with time set aside for group discussion.

Apprentices will complete much of their work at their workplace, with an estimate that this will take up 20% of their time. The individual case study will most likely involve a project at the employer’s organisation, offering an immediate benefit to businesses too.

Businesses that support the apprenticeship will be rewarded with a fully qualified engineer who has learnt on the job and is ready to help lead your company towards world class digital manufacturing solutions.

The apprenticeship will cost £17,000 which can be funded via the Apprenticeship Levy. However, there is the option for co-investment whereby the Government will pay 95% of the apprenticeship costs, leaving the employer with costs of just £850.
