Skillweld Semi-Final Heats Get Underway

Fri, 31 May, 2019

The regional semi-final heats of the annual Skillweld Competition are underway. Supported by The Welding Institute, the competition helps to encourage the next generation of skilled welders with the finalists getting to compete at The Skills Show at the NEC in Birmingham in November.

The regional semi-finals require the welders to create weld test pieces using MMA, MIG/Mag and TIG welding. These test pieces are then judged, with the highest scoring welders being put forward to the final.

The Skillweld Competition semi-finals began with the first heat taking place on 30 May at New College, Lanarkshire. Other heats will be held around the UK up until 10 July.

Those welders who make it through to compete at the SkillWeld final may also gain the chance to progress and represent the UK at the international WorldSkills competition (subject to meeting the selection criteria).

SkillWeld is just one example of how The Welding Institute are helping to address the reported shortage of young welders in the UK.
