TWI featured in ‘Horizon 2020 in Wales’ report

Thu, 28 March, 2019

Horizon 2020 have produced their fourth annual report, detailing how the Welsh businesses and universities are contributing to global projects with a value of €1.4 billion.

The report includes a case study on TWI Wales’ input to the programme, showing how the Port Talbot-based TWI Technology Centre has built up a significant presence over the past 15 years, with a specialisation in non-destructive testing for industries including aerospace.

With support provided by UK and European funding, the Technology Centre has helped push forward advanced engineering and materials research for areas such as rail infrastructure and offshore oil and gas.

In addition, £7.5 million was invested to support the development of the new TWI Advanced Engineering Research Institute (AEMRI), with state-of-the-art equipment being brought in to assist with materials and engineering testing. The report also notes how AEMRI is supporting PhD students and skilled researchers, with an overall aim to increase TWI’s network of collaborative relationships with academia and industry in the UK and Europe.

With mention of a number of ongoing collaborative projects, the Horizon 2020 report shows how TWI has played a role in the volume, quality, impact and international reach of Welsh research.

You can read the full case study on page 18 of the complete report, which is available in both English and Welsh language versions.
