TWI was among the award-winners when 300 people from around the world gathered at the Composites UK Awards 2018.
A black tie awards dinner was held at the National Motorcycle Museum, Birmingham, on 31st October, with TWI being represented by Senior Project Leader, Dr. Jasmin Stein, who collected the award for Innovation in Composite Design.
Speaking on the award, Dr. Stein said, “I am delighted to receive the Innovation in Composite design award on behalf of the team at TWI. It is an honour to be recognised by the Composites UK trade association.”
Paul Burling is the inventor of the technology, and the team currently working on the SurFlow™ technology are Paul Burling, Dimitris Fakis, Mihalis Kazilas, Stuart Lewis, Jasmin Stein and Chris Worrall.
The award, sponsored by the Advanced Engineering Show, was for the development of the SurFlow™ product, an innovative new method of secure data transmission through composite structures using electromagnetic surface waves.
SurFlow™ allows a composite structure to become the medium for surface wave propagation, eliminating the need for wiring or fibre optics without affecting the performance of the composite itself. The innovative technology allows for data transmission, whether for information, live video feeds or control signals through the surface of the composite itself, and can be used in a range of applications from aircraft, to cars, trains, ships, buildings and even in oil and gas composite risers.
Advantages of the system include offering a 20% reduction in the wiring harness for aircraft and a subsequent reduction in fuel consumption. It is due to the versatility of the product that SurFlow™ has been described as the ‘future of composite data highways.’
TWI holds the UK (GB2522344B) and US (US10090715B2) patents for SurFlow™, while the European patent is pending.
