TWI installs coaxial wire laser metal deposition equipment

Thu, 28 March, 2019

TWI has installed a new coaxial wire laser deposition robot at our Yorkshire TWI Technology Centre near Rotherham.

The Precitec CoaxPrinter deposition head is coupled with a 5.3kW Trumpf Disk laser and feeds 0.8mm-1.6mm diameter wire via a Binzel Master feeder. All systems are integrated into the Kuka robot control software.

The CoaxPrinter allows directionally independent laser metal deposition, giving enhanced freedom of movement. Based on the unique ring-shaped beam and the coaxial feeding of the filler material, the wire is fused homogeneously from all directions.

TWI will be trialling the coaxial wire process for the next few months as part of an important programme of work on multi-material additive manufacturing.

You can find out more about additive manufacturing at TWI here.
