Richard Freeman to be Honoured with Welding Industry Award

Thu, 28 May, 2020

TWI’s Group Manager for Industrial Members and Key Accounts, Richard Freeman is due to be honoured as a co-recipient of the International Meritorious Certificate Award, which is sponsored by the American Welding Society (AWS).

The award is conferred as a reflection of “service to the international welding community” and is given in recognition of significant contributions to the worldwide welding industry.

Richard has been working at TWI since 1996, where he has looked after the customer base for the transport sector (aerospace, defence, automotive, rail and shipbuilding). However, he has also been instrumental in a number of industrial committees, including the AWS D17 committee for welding in the aerospace industry since 1998.

Richard’s work with AWS D17 recently saw him work to ensure the friction stir welding (FSW) specification AWS D17.3 successfully passed ballot to be published for the 3rd edition of the specification. This is critical for the continued use of the FSW in the space and military aircraft industries. He has also been working on progressing the specification for fusion welding in the aerospace industry as part of his work with the AWS D17.1 committee.

Richard has been invited to attend the Awards/AWS Foundation Recognition Luncheon at the FABTECH Show in Las Vegas on 19 November 2020, to receive the award. While his attendance is dependent on the status of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Richard confirmed that he is honoured that his many years of work have been recognised by his peers.
