Welding Institute Branch Learns About Friction Welding

Tue, 24 September, 2019

The Welding Institute’s Merseyside Branch held a meeting on 19th September 2019 to discuss the processing fundamentals of friction welding technologies, along with their industrial applications.

The talk, ‘An Overview of Friction Welding Technologies’ was given by TWI Senior Project Leader, Anthony McAndrew.

Friction welding has gained increased interest in industry in recent years, particularly with regard to minimising distortion and better maintaining mechanical properties when joining metals.

This talk provided an overview of established friction welding processes, including:

Anthony also provided detailed discussions on the exciting advancements being made into Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding (RFSSW) – a zero mass-adding spot-joining process, robotic Friction Stir Welding – a process that allows for 3D weld paths to be achieved, and the game-changing heat exchanger manufacturing technology of Friction Stir Channelling (FSch).

The meeting was well received by around 20 attendees who had plenty of questions for Anthony following the talk.
