TWI paper chosen by Ceramics Committee at Turbo Expo 2018

Wed, 27 February, 2019

A paper written by Eleri Weston (nee Williams) and Ian Nicholson of TWI alongside Martin Bache of The Institute for Structural Materials, Swansea University, was chosen as one of the best papers by the Ceramics Committee at the Turbo Expo 2018 in Lillestrøm, Norway.

The paper, ‘In-situ Assessment of Fracture in SICF/SIC under Computed X-ray Tomography,’ investigates the use of x-ray computed tomography (XCT) for detecting sub-critical damage and ultimate failure mechanisms in a ceramic matrix composite (CMC).

Through a series of inspections, the paper demonstrates positive steps towards a greater understanding of the mechanical behaviour of these materials, with an added consideration for the development of XCT systems for the in-situ inspection of CMC materials.

You can read the paper now on the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) website.

This collaboration was derived from Eleri's project work, supported by Welsh Government and funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales as part of the Sêr Cymru I programme (National Research Network Wales for Advanced Engineering and Materials), Grant no. NRNC04.
