Welding and Joining Processe Technical Group and The Welding Institute London Branch Meeting: Advances in Welding Technology

Hosted by Fronius International and organised in collaboration with Cranfield University. Join our Welding and Joining Processes Technical Group (TG2) and The Welding Institute London Branch.

Event overview

Join us for an exciting day of technical demonstrations, expert talks, and student innovation, all focused on the future of welding technology and education.

Afternoon session: Technical Talks and Live Demonstrations

Following registration at 1:30pm the technical sessions and live demonstrations will begin at 2:00pm.

This session contains a series of in-depth technical talks and live demonstrations, presented by a range of industry experts:

  • Advances in TIG Welding - Sheldon Brear, Fronius Ltd Followed by Kevin Rawson - Demonstration on Dynamic TIG Welding and Stainless Steel
  • Advances in Weld Monitoring - presented by Chris Cathles, TVC Ltd. Followed by live demonstrations on Arc Monitoring, Purge Technology and Laser Cameras.
  • Advances in MIG Welding - presented by Bernd Rutzinger, Fronius Ltd. Followed by live demonstrations on I WAVE Pro and Stainless Steel.
  • In addition, Dr James Wainwright from Cranfield University will be presenting on Advances in Welding Education - showcasing how educational advancements are driving industry progress.

BBQ and Networking:

Enjoy our BBQ and network with others working in welding technology, industry experts and leaders in the welding community.

Evening session: MSc Group Project Lecture Competition

Round off the day with the Cranfield University Welding Engineering MSc Group Project Lecture Competition, sponsored by The Welding Institute's London Branch.

Three Group projects will be presented by 18 MSc Students, currently enrolled at Cranfield University:

  • Laser welding of Duplex steels with oscillated profile
  • Improvement of surface finish for wear plate using Laser Scanning
  • The use of Flux Cored Wires with advanced power sources

    These students bring an abundance of experience from across the globe. Including International Welding Engineer (IWE) and European Welding Engineer (EWE) diploma holders. An American Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), and a Non-Destructive Testing expert with 20+ years experience in the Oil and Gas Industry.

A panel of judges will evaluate each presentation and select a prizewinning team with the award to be presented by the President of The Welding Institute’s London Branch.

*Please note: Attendance is limited to 80 participants and tickets will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Validation Centre (TVC)

Having worked at OIS Engineering Ltd in Great Yarmouth developing, manufacturing and selling the original PAMS (Portable Arc Monitoring Systems) from 1987 to 1994, Chris Cathles left OIS and started The Validation Centre (TVC) Ltd in 1995.

Initially TVC was set up with his Business Partner Kim Hastings to provide service, support and calibration of Welding Inspection and NDT equipment. However in 1997 TVC started the development of their own Weld Datalogging and Monitoring systems and since then have developed equipment covering all aspects of weld data-logging and monitoring.

Dr Wainwright holds a PhD in Manufacturing with respect to welding and additive manufacturing of titanium alloys. They also act as module lead for several modules of the Welding Engineering MSc at Cranfield University, developing course material and teaching.
