Heat Treatment of AM Metals Webinar Available to View Online

Thu, 22 September, 2022

Our hugely popular webinar dedicated to the subject of heat treating additively manufactured metals is now available to view online.

The webinar, ‘Heat Treatment of Additively Manufactured Metals,’ which took place on 6 September 2022, saw around 800 people register and 400 attend from 55 different countries.

TWI experts Dr Kostas Georgilas, Dibakor Boruah, and Madie Allen offered information around how heat treatments need to be adjusted to accommodate the complicated thermal history caused by additive manufacturing (AM) processes.

These AM processes create microstructures that are not typically seen in wrought, cast or powder metallurgy materials. This means that traditional heat treatments need to be adjusted, which can be achieved through changing temperatures, holding times, environment, and cooling methods.

Adjusting the heat treatments can also allow for modifications to the AM microstructure, such as decreasing material anisotropy between the build and transverse directions.

The webinar discussed heat treatments and the adjustments to accommodate AM materials as well as offering case studies of both traditional and adjusted heat treatment methods.
