TWI Holds Successful Space Sector Webinar (Plus Video)

TWI held a webinar dedicated to ‘Advanced Manufacturing Technologies for the Space Sector’ on 10 November 2021.

The 3-hour online event included eight speakers from TWI and Andy Norman, Senior Materials Engineer and Technology Coordinator for the European Space Agency.

The event began with a welcome from TWI’s Research Director, Paul Woollin before Industry Sector Manager, Chris Wiseman delivered an introduction to the event.

Andy Norman then delivered a presentation on ‘Advanced Manufacturing for Space Applications, an ESA Cross Cutting Initiative.’

This was followed by a series of technology-based presentations from TWI staff, detailing some of our work in this area. James Redman, Principal Project Leader - Thermal Processing Technologies provided ‘An Introduction into the Joining of Dissimilar Materials,’ before TWI’s Section Manager and Technology Consultant for Laser Additive Manufacturing, Carl Hauser provided information on ‘Metal Laser Additive Manufacturing.’

Henry Begg, TWI’s Section Manager for Surface, Corrosion and Interface Engineering, then presented on ‘Cold Spray and Thermal Spray Coatings’ before TWI Consultant, Chris Worrall presented on our SurflowTM technology on behalf of Section Manager, Jasmin Stein. The final presentation was made by Joao Gandra and Kate Franklin of our Friction and Forge Processes team on the subject of ‘Innovative Friction Welding Processes.’

The event, which saw 130 attendees, ended with a group discussion and some closing statements.
