New Joint Industry Project Exploring Mechanically Lined Pipe

Mon, 27 April, 2020

TWI is launching a new research programme, based on TWI’s experience in several projects for the oil and gas sector, that will investigate the state of the art of mechanically lined pipes (MLP).  With the oil price at the lowest level in the last two decades, the oil and gas industry needs ways to reduce expenditure, and MLP has the potential to save 25-40% compared to clad pipes.

This new programme will focus on industry needs, by addressing issues and concerns about MLP identified by industry representatives during a workshop held at TWI last year.

This research programme will encourage interaction and discussions among sponsors and at least 10 TWI Industrial Member companies will participate in the project team.

This new joint industry project (JIP) has a modest ticket price. Project sponsors will benefit from a document which details the state of the art in MLP, allowing for a better understanding of this product which has the potential to deliver significant cost savings.

From manufacturing to installation and operation of MLP, this document will be useful for professionals working for TWI Industrial Members in all aspects of the oil and gas supply chain (pipe manufacturers, NDT contractors, design and installation companies, and oil operators).

A gap analysis will also be produced, where research topics relevant to the industry will be clearly identified so that they can be addressed in future JIPs at TWI, focussing on increasing operational safety and the competitiveness of MLP technology.

TWI wants to help Industrial Members to make the most of this technology, and so is inviting them to join the sponsor group for this new JIP on mechanically line pipes.
