TWI Expert to Present PM HIP talk at TMS 2024

Fri, 04 August, 2023

TWI will be presenting next year in The TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition in Orlando, Florida, which is taking place from 3-7 March, 2024.

PhD student Alice Appleby will be presenting the topic of, "Hot Isostatic Pressing of Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Steels: Microstructure and Mechanical Properties" as part of the symposium on Powder Materials Processing and Fundamental Understanding.

Written by authors Alice Appleby, Raja Khan, Yu-Lung Chiu and Moataz Attallah, the presentation will explain microstructural and mechanical properties development in powder sintering of oxide dispersion strengthened steel powders using hot isostatic pressing (HIP).

Two high chromium (20wt.%) ODS PM2000 steel batches were produced through two different powder manufacturing routes: the first being mechanical alloying (MA) while the other used vacuum inert gas atomisation (VIGA) and gas atomisation reactive synthesis (GARS). The two ODS powders were subsequently consolidated using HIPing. Characterisation focuses on the effect the powder manufacturing methods on the nano and microscale properties of the yttrium oxide (Y2O3) clusters and the micro- and macro-scale effect of the differing powder quality. The response of each material to proton irradiation was characterised. The presentation will bring attention to the effect of powder quality on the properties of ODS structural materials for nuclear fusion applications.
