Staff at TWI celebrated International Women’s Day on 8 March, beginning with an online event that brought together employees from across the world.
International Women’s Day has a long history, having first been honoured in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland as an extension of the United States’ ‘National Women’s Day,’ which was first observed in 1908.
Having originally grown from demands for better working conditions and the right to vote, International Women’s Day is an opportunity to recognise the invaluable efforts and achievements of women in various fields, while highlighting the continued need to promote gender equity in all areas of life.
The online event for all TWI staff featured a panel of speakers from within the company who spoke about the importance of International Women’s Day to them, shared their personal experiences, criticisms, and ideas for furthering the cause. The panel also answered some questions about promoting gender equity and emphasised the critical role women play in driving innovation and success, contributing immeasurably to our societies and economies. The event also highlighted TWI’s ongoing efforts to achieve diversity and inclusion across the organisation.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme was ‘#embrace equity,’ with TWI staff from across our international offices taking part in a photo campaign where they were pictured in this year’s IWD pose. These photographs reflected the diversity of our workforce and our shared commitment to supporting gender equity across our diverse community at TWI.
