Professional Q+A: Claire Christey MSc IEng MWeldI

Thu, 17 August, 2023

With 2023 marking 100 years of The Welding Institute, we have been contacting our Professional Members to find out more about their careers and how The Institute has helped them progress.

This week we hear from Claire Christey, who is a Team Leader within Port Engineering at the Shetland Islands Council, where she has line management responsibility for a team of senior technical engineers, electrical and marine engineers and responsibility for the maintenance of all the Council’s marine fixed assets, ranging from navigation buoys to the Sullom Voe Terminal Oil Export Jetties.

Claire told us about the variety of work that she encounters on a daily basis and why she chose to pursue a career in marine engineering as well as her reasons for becoming a Professional Member.

She also opened up about opting to become professionally-registered as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and how she has found support from The Welding Institute to be invaluable, especially as she is working in a remote and isolated location.

Claire also spoke on the membership benefits she uses the most and gave us an insight into her career aspirations. She finished with her thoughts on the benefits of becoming a Member of The Welding Institute, and you can read her interview in full on The Institute website, here.
