Experts Awarded BINDT Award for Journal Paper

Tue, 19 September, 2023

Experts from TWI and University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) were awarded the John Grimwade Medal at an award ceremony at the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) annual NDT and CM conference, NDT 2023/CM 2023.

The award is conferred by BINDT for the best paper by an Institute member to appear in the Institute’s journal in the preceding year. This award, which was inaugurated in 1981, commemorates the late E J Grimwade MC HonFInstNDT, who was a major pioneering figure in the NDT world.

TWI Robotics Engineer, Ross Hanna, who currently works at TWI Technology Centre (Wales), was accompanied by UWTSD’s Professor of Applied NDT, Professor Peter Charlton to accept the award on behalf of themselves and co-authors, TWI Software Consultant, Dr Mark Sutcliffe and UWTSD’s Senior Lecturer in the School of Applied Computing, Dr Stephen Mosey.

The award-winning paper, ‘Efficient algebraic image reconstruction technique for computed tomography’, was published in Insight, Vol 64, No 6, pp 326-333 in June 2022.

This project has been undertaken as part of an initiative known as AEMRI (Advanced Engineering Materials Research Institute), which is funded by the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) using European Regional Development Funds (EDRF).

We are delighted that Ross and Mark have been recognised for the award alongside their co-authors from UWTSD, showing how TWI continues to help progress industrial research across a range of fields.
