COMPASS: Shaping the Future of Geothermal Wells

TWI Project Leader, Tomaso Maccio delivered an insightful presentation titled, "COMPASS - Shaping the Future of Geothermal Wells in Superhot Contexts" at the TWI Oil and Gas Panel Meeting on 8 June at TWI Cambridge.

The presentation shed light on the innovative COMPASS project and its ground-breaking efforts to engage with local communities in geothermal areas.

The Horizon Europe COMPASS project aims to develop, test and verify improved and innovative drilling and completion technologies to increase the number of economically viable high-temperature geothermal wells, and thereby reduce the environmental impact and cost associated with the provision of geothermal energy.

Tomaso Maccio's presentation highlighted the transformative potential of the COMPASS project and the pivotal role played by TWI and its partners in shaping the future of geothermal energy.

By fostering community engagement and employing cutting-edge laser additive manufacturing techniques, the project aims to address key challenges, accelerate the adoption of geothermal energy, and contribute to the sustainable development of superhot geothermal territories.

Through our pioneering efforts, TWI is charting a path towards a more sustainable and prosperous future, harnessing the power of geothermal energy in superhot contexts.

The European Commission-funded COMPASS project consortium working for new energy solutions for the future, including experts from Orka Náttúrunnar, Orkuveita Reykjavikur, Georg, Hornet Laser Cladding, ÍSOR (Iceland GeoSurvey), SINTEF, CURISTEC, COSVIG, and Technovative Solutions.
