High Performance Automotive with a Green Future

Thu, 26 August, 2021

A video has been released offering details of the collaborative APC6 automotive project that saw TWI work closely with a range of partners including BMW, McLaren, Delta Motorsport, Williams Advanced Engineering, UTAC CERAM Millbrook, HORIBA MIRA, and WMG at the University of Warwick.

The project saw original equipment manufacturers share their expertise to develop new pouch battery modules for electric vehicles. The world class performance battery systems are to be used by BMW demonstrator vehicles and by all of the teams in the British Touring Car Championships.

The research and development work saw improvements in battery cell power and performance, with McLaren noting the systems allow for acceleration from 0-300 kph in 13 seconds.

These developments saw TWI assist with knowledge transfer for robust technology scale-up and the application of laser welding to the specific needs of the products.

Aligning the development of the battery systems with industry standards means that production can be scaled up as required.

Aside from the technological advancements, this video shows how, by building relationships between businesses, we can meet the challenges of the future.
