Dr Yanhui Zhang attended the OMAE 2020 virtual conference where he presented TWI’s paper on, ‘Evaluation of the Solutions for Calculating Misalignment-Induced Stress Concentration Factor at Girth Welds in Pipelines.’
The conference, originally scheduled to take place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from June 28 to July 3, 2020, was held from 3 – 7 August 2020 as an online conference because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although it was disappointing for all delegates not to be able to communicate with each other face-to-face in the conference venue, the conference proved to be successful by attracting over 700 papers and over 600 video presentations. It was a new experience for all the delegates attending the conference.
Girth welds in pipelines inevitably contain a centre-line offset. This will introduce a misalignment-induced stress concentration factor, Km, which must be considered in the fatigue design of girth welded pipelines. TWI’s paper (OMAE2020-18288), written by Yanhui Zhang, Matthew Dore and Jazeel Chukkan, reviewed several available Km solutions and verifies them by performing finite element analyses. Based on the study, the most appropriate Km solution was recommended.
