Project Outline

Until recently, the use of additive manufacturing (AM) has been restricted to prototype production. Considering that most of the structures in real world applications are subject to cyclic loading (which makes them susceptible to fatigue type failure) for widespread usage of the AM technology, fatigue failure mechanisms need to be well understood.

Current literature has shown that process-induced defects act as an important source of fatigue failure. This PhD aims to develop a method for assessing the criticality of porosity-type defects under fatigue loads. It involves using X-ray computer tomography to quantify pore morphology and studying the mechanisms of pore behaviour and material degradation under fatigue loads through experimentation and mechanistic models.
