TWI India recently conducted a highly informative and well-received technical webinar on 27th June 2025, addressing a critical challenge in the field of ultrasonic testing — TOFD (Time of Flight Diffraction) depth error caused by lateral uncertainty of defect location and features of parallel scan to resolve this error. The session also focused on the practical benefits of parallel scanning techniques in resolving such inspection challenges.
The webinar attracted participation from NDT professionals, quality inspectors, and industry stakeholders keen to enhance their understanding of TOFD’s capabilities and limitations. With a strong focus on both theoretical frameworks and practical applications, the session offered valuable takeaways for attendees across various sectors, including oil & gas, power, manufacturing, and infrastructure.
Key Highlights of the Session:
- Fundamentals of TOFD: Explanation of wave behavior, equipment configuration, and general setup
- Common TOFD Errors: Understanding depth sizing inaccuracies and dead zones
- Scanning Techniques: Overview of different scan types suited for various applications
- Focus on Parallel Scan: In-depth coverage of data acquisition strategies, analysis methods, and a balanced discussion of its advantages and limitations
The webinar equipped participants with a solid foundation in TOFD, particularly emphasizing how lateral defect location uncertainties can lead to incorrect depth estimation — a concern that directly impacts inspection reliability. The session demonstrated how the parallel scan technique can mitigate such errors, offering improved accuracy and data consistency.
A Step Forward in NDT Knowledge Sharing
Through this initiative, TWI India reinforced its commitment to advancing knowledge and best practices in the non-destructive testing (NDT) community. The session provided actionable insights for professionals aiming to elevate the precision and integrity of ultrasonic inspections.
TWI India extends its gratitude to all participants and looks forward to continuing this knowledge-sharing journey through more such technical webinars and training programmes in the future.
