Importance of Certification over Qualification

Wed, 11 May, 2022

Have you ever wondered what these terminologies mean and why should you and your welding personnel should be preferably certified even though they are qualified?

The difference is clear cut. Qualification means mostly an academic qualification like B.E, B.Tech, and M.Tech etc. It is usually given by a university on successful completion of a course curriculum and an examination. It has no validity period and indicates that the person has in general knowledge of the subject. Qualification tends to be general in nature.

On the other hand, a certification is done for competency, skill etc. by going through a course and examination and has a validity period. It has to be renewed after a certain period usually through an examination. Usually the area, activities of certification are narrow.

It should be understood that while qualification is necessary in some places, the certification is essential in some other places and both have their value and recognition in appropriate places. Usually the certification is made mandatory or specified by the codes, specifications.

As far as welding field is concerned it is desirable or mandatory to have certified welding personnel for various welding activities like inspection, welder etc. to ensure proper procedures are followed at all stages of fabrication. Many fabrication codes specify certification of welding personnel.
