Why attend

  • Gain essential understanding of ASME Section VIII Div.1 rules for unfired pressure vessels.
  • Learn how to apply code requirements for design, materials, fabrication, inspection and testing.
  • Improve confidence in handling Manufacturer’s Data Reports, stamping and certification processes.
  • Prepare your organisation for ASME Authorised Inspection and certification audits.

Learning objectives

By completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the scope and structure of ASME Section VIII Div.1.
  • Recognise responsibilities of users, manufacturers and authorised inspectors.
  • Apply design rules including Maximum Allowable Working Pressure, design temperature and MDMT.
  • Understand requirements for materials selection, fabrication methods and impact testing.
  • Interpret rules for inspection, NDE, pressure testing, stamping and documentation.
  • Address specific code provisions for lethal service, low temperature service and welded vessels.
  • Relate appendices and supplementary design formulas to vessel design and quality control.

Course outline

  • Introduction & brief history of ASME BPVC and referenced sections
  • ASME Certificate of Authorisation, Certification Mark and Authorised Inspection
  • Subsection A: General requirements (materials, design, fabrication, examination, inspection, testing, stamping, certification)
  • Design rules: loading conditions, MAWP, design temperature, MDMT
  • Materials selection, fabrication methods, impact testing and exemptions
  • Inspection, NDE and pressure testing practices
  • Subsection B: Specific requirements for welded vessels — weld joint categories, joint efficiency, welded connections, NDT
  • Requirements for lethal service and low-temperature applications
  • Subsection C & D: Material-specific requirements — carbon steel, low alloy and high alloy steels; heat treatment and exemptions
  • Mandatory Appendices: flange design, supplementary design formulas, quality control systems, designer qualifications, applicable code editions
  • Special topics: jacketed vessels, non-circular vessels, bellows expansion joints, heat exchangers

Prerequisites
