- Strengthen internal QA/QC controls and simplify third-party inspections.
- Gain a recognised certificate from ASME jointly issued with TWI India.
Learning objectives
By the end of the course participants will be able to:
- Explain the structure and purpose of ASME BPVC and Section IX.
- Prepare, review and verify Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR).
- Compile, review and interpret Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ) records.
- Understand welding variables and how they affect qualification and joint properties.
- Supervise qualification tests and understand the duties and requirements for test supervisors.
- Relate destructive and non-destructive testing methods to welded joint properties and quality control.
Course outline
- Introduction to ASME BPVC and referenced construction codes.
- Structure and scope of ASME Section IX: qualification of procedures, welders and operators.
- General requirements for joining processes and welding variables.
- Welding Procedure Qualification: preparing and reviewing WPS and PQR documents.
- Welder Performance Qualification: testing, record keeping and review of WPQ records.
- Supervision of qualification tests — roles, responsibilities and best practice.
- Practical interpretation of test results and common non-conformances in fabrication shops.
Prerequisites
Experience in boiler and pressure-vessel manufacturing is desirable but not mandatory. The course is designed for engineers and supervisors who will be applying Section IX in a fabrication/shop environment.
Assessment & Certification
Participants will undergo a formal assessment (written exam) and evaluation. On successful completion, delegates receive a joint certificate from ASME and TWI India, confirming competence in the covered aspects of Section IX.
