Case Study: Mr. Bunhom Yenhom

Thu, 29 October, 2026

For many engineering graduates, the transition from university to a professional engineering career can be challenging. While academic knowledge provides a strong foundation, employers increasingly seek candidates who can demonstrate practical skills, industry-recognised qualifications and an understanding of international standards.

For Mr. Bunhom Yenhom, the South East Asia Skills Enhancement Programme (SEASEP) provided that crucial bridge - transforming his interest in welding and inspection into an internationally recognised professional qualification and, ultimately, an engineering career with an international company.

“The SEASEP programme offers far more than international certification; it serves as a springboard empowering fresh graduates to launch successful engineering careers, secure competitive incomes, and tangibly improve their families’ well-being.”

From the Classroom to the World of Welding Inspection

Bunhom’s journey began while he was studying Industrial Engineering and undertaking a specialised welding course. During his studies, his course advisor introduced him to the opportunity to participate in CSWIP 3.0 Visual Welding Inspector training through SEASEP.

Recognising the opportunity to strengthen his technical knowledge and gain a qualification valued by industry, Bunhom decided to take part in the fully funded programme.

The training gave him the opportunity to build on his existing understanding of welding and develop a much deeper knowledge of weld inspection standards, acceptance criteria and defect identification and analysis.

What began as an opportunity to supplement his university education became a significant milestone in his professional development.

Turning Certification into Career Opportunity

After graduating, Bunhom began looking for opportunities to establish himself as an engineer. When he applied for an Engineer position with a stainless steel pipe manufacturer headquartered in the UK, his CSWIP 3.0 certification immediately helped distinguish his application.

The internationally recognised qualification demonstrated to the interview panel that, alongside his engineering degree, Bunhom had already developed specialised knowledge relevant to welding quality and inspection.

The combination of his academic background and industry-recognised certification helped him secure the position immediately after graduation.

For Bunhom, this meant more than simply obtaining his first job. He achieved the professional position and salary he had aspired to while beginning his engineering career, creating a positive impact on both his personal circumstances and his family’s well-being.

Applying SEASEP Skills in the Workplace

Today, the knowledge Bunhom gained through CSWIP 3.0 continues to play an important role in his day-to-day engineering responsibilities.

As part of his role, he uses his visual welding inspection expertise to establish standard quality control criteria for QC operators, ensuring that inspection practices align with customer requirements.

When welding defects occur, he contributes to root-cause investigations, helping identify the underlying causes of quality issues and supporting the development of appropriate corrective actions.

His technical knowledge also enables him to provide support to QC teams when they encounter complex inspection or quality-related challenges.

These responsibilities demonstrate how the skills developed through SEASEP have moved beyond the classroom and become practical tools that Bunhom uses to contribute to quality, compliance and operational performance in an international manufacturing environment.

Building a Stronger Safety Culture

The training also strengthened Bunhom’s awareness of workplace safety and the hazards associated with welding activities.

In his professional role, he applies this awareness by encouraging safe working practices and advising welders on the importance of using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

For him, technical competence and workplace safety go hand in hand. His experience demonstrates how professional training can help young engineers contribute not only to product quality, but also to safer working environments.

Looking Ahead: The Next Step in His Engineering Journey

Bunhom sees his current role as another step in a longer professional journey.

His immediate goal is to continue building practical experience and making full use of his CSWIP 3.0 knowledge in the workplace. Looking further ahead, he plans to progress towards the CSWIP 3.1 certification, strengthening his expertise and expanding his professional opportunities within the welding inspection and engineering sector.

His ambition is clear: to continue developing his technical capabilities and progress towards becoming a highly skilled engineering specialist.

More Than a Qualification

Bunhom’s story illustrates the wider impact of SEASEP. By giving young engineering students and graduates access to internationally recognised training and certification, the programme can help bridge the gap between academic learning and industry expectations.

For Bunhom, the journey started with a recommendation from his course advisor and an opportunity to participate in a specialised training programme. It has since led to an international engineering career, greater professional confidence and improved prospects for his family.

His experience demonstrates what can happen when talented young engineers are given access to the right skills, qualifications and opportunities at the beginning of their careers.

From an Industrial Engineering student discovering welding inspection to an engineer contributing to quality and safety within an international manufacturing company, Bunhom Yenhom’s journey is a powerful example of how SEASEP can help turn potential into professional success.
