Who should attend?

Candidates who already hold a CSWIP Blasting and Painting Operator certification or applicants with industrial experience in the field of blasting and painting operations who are yet to be certified or contenders that hold a Blasting and Painting certificate but are looking for international recognition.

 

Where can I take the training?

Currently, this training is only available in Brunei and Malaysia. However, TWI is in the midst of setting up more facilities to cater to the demand geographically.

What will I learn?

 

  • Risk Assessments, health, safety and environmental aspects – candidates shall assess the risks before commencing any blasting and painting activities. Implementation and compliance of procedures, guidelines, standards and specifications
  • Evaluation of hazards before, during and after activities to ensure the protection of the environment and associated personnel
  • Equipment checks - carry out pre-checks on all equipment including compressors, air supplies, blast pots, hose connections, whiplash restraints, nozzles, air-breathing filters, dead man's handles, spray guns, spray pumps and validation of all associated equipment
  • Materials/consumables - carry out checks on abrasives for signs of contamination, expiry dates of paints and compliance with the relevant documentation
  • Personal protective equipment - perform pre-checks and maintenance reports on all PPE (blasting helmets, blasting overalls, dust and chemical respirators, eye/ear protection, safety boots, microporous coveralls) and ensuring appropriate use for the intended application
  • Set-up of equipment - ensuring appropriate set up of all related blasting and painting equipment. Candidates will gain the working knowledge of safe setting-up and securely dismantling all associated equipment
  • Techniques:

 

  1. Preparing surfaces to the required standards with adherence to the relevant specifications
  2. Painting and coating surfaces with brushes or spray application in accordance with the manufacturers' recommendations and relevant specifications
  3. Considering potential impacts on the environment and other personnel when handling, using and disposing of materials associated with blasting and painting operations

 

  • Surface preparation – candidates will be capable of assessing surface conditions, select the preparation technique appropriate to the degree of corrosion and surface cleanliness
  • Candidates will be proficient in understanding and demonstrating the ability of masking and appropriate stripe coats before paint application
  • Coating sequence – candidates will be able to demonstrate and adhere to the coating stages (primer, mid and finish-coats), and mix constituents as per the product technical data sheets
  • Candidates will advance to appreciate the fine art and techniques involved in the related field
  • Coating quality – carrying out inspection and assessments of coating films to identify faults and reporting them for consideration of remedial action 

 

What will I leave with?

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to understand and/ or demonstrate:

  • Familiarisation with the relevant documentation
  • Evaluate any potential risks involved and complete a Job Hazard Analysis
  • Conduct pre-checks on all equipment (compressor, air supplies, blast pot, hose connections, whiplash restraints, nozzles, air-breathing filters, dead man's handle, spray guns, spray pumps, but not limited to)
  • Check the abrasives for any signs of contamination, as well as the identification of different consumables and validity
  • Check whether PPE is adequate for the task to be performed (blasting helmets, blasting overalls, dust and chemical respirators, eye protection, ear protection, safety boots, microporous coveralls)
  • Set up all the blasting and painting equipment in a controlled and correct manner (blasting/painting hose lines to be flushed out to remove any contamination)
  • Perform safe and efficient techniques, ensuring that the surfaces are free from any imperfections
  • Achieve a specified degree of cleanliness and surface profile during dry abrasive blasting and paint application to a specified Wet Film Thickness (WFT) and Dry Film Thickness (DFT) range
  • Utilise basic inspection equipment.
  • Determine optimum pressures as stated on the technical datasheet, and maintain adequate induction periods and pot lives
  • Determine the correct mixing ratio of paints or abrasives, ensuring a thorough mixture
  • Clean and flush hose lines, spray guns and pressure pots as specified by the manufactures manual
  • Dismantle the equipment and understand the objectives of various equipment usages, storage, handling and maintenance
  • Meet the requirements of CSWIP and be in a position to pass the theoretical examination and practical assessment
  • Basic fundamentals of corrosion
  • Different surface preparation methods in accordance to various standards
  • Different types of rust grades, blast grades, identifying their visual appearance and definition in accordance with ISO, SSPC and NACE standards
  • Basic methods of measuring and assessing a surface profile
  • Why contaminations must be detected and removed prior to painting
  • Basic fundaments of paint constituents (solvents, pigments, binders etc.)
  • Reasons and functions of primer, mid-coat and finish coat
  • Identify coating faults, their cause and remedially actions.
  • The rationale for carrying out adhesion, holiday and thickness testing

What are the entry requirements?

Certified Blasting and Painting Operator for a minimum of six months with the job responsibilities listed in clause 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 within the scheme document CSWIP-BP-25-16.

Or

A minimum of one-year industrial experience as a blasting and painting operator, the duties and responsibilities shall relate to clause 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 listed within the scheme document CSWIP-BP-25-16, under qualified supervision and independently verified.

Or

Candidates who hold a recognised Blasting and Painting certification [e.g. SSPC-CAS-level 1, IMM-PCT-T-level 1, OPITO-Blaster/ Painter-level 1, NACE-NII-CCA or equivalent] with at least three (3) months, recent continuous industrial experience with the responsibilities as indicated in clause 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 of the scheme document CSWIP-BP-25-16, under qualified supervision and independently verified.
