Webinar on Pathway to CSWIP Ultrasonic Testing Certification

Thu, 05 November, 2026

TWI Malaysia successfully hosted a technical webinar titled “How to Get Certified in CSWIP Ultrasonic Testing: Steps, Requirements & Practical Tips” on 29 September 2026. The session was delivered by Mr Rusydan Mohamad, Senior Lecturer – Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), who provided participants with valuable insights into the CSWIP certification pathway, eligibility requirements and practical preparation strategies.

The webinar aimed to help NDT professionals and aspiring inspection personnel understand the process of obtaining CSWIP Ultrasonic Testing (UT) certification under ISO 9712, while highlighting the importance of professional competence in maintaining industrial safety and quality.

Understanding Ultrasonic Testing and Its Industry Applications

The session began with an introduction to Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), explaining how these techniques are used to evaluate materials and components without causing damage. Participants explored the role of NDT in identifying surface and internal flaws, ensuring product integrity, preventing failures and reducing repair costs.

The presentation then focused on Ultrasonic Testing (UT), a widely used volumetric inspection method that uses high-frequency sound waves to identify internal flaws and assess material thickness. The technique is particularly relevant to industries such as oil and gas, power generation, aerospace, manufacturing and construction.

Mr Rusydan also discussed common UT applications, including weld inspection, casting and forging evaluation, machined component inspection, and maintenance activities across industrial sectors.

Understanding the CSWIP Certification Pathway

A key highlight of the webinar was a detailed explanation of the CSWIP certification process and its alignment with ISO 9712 requirements.

Participants were introduced to the three NDT certification levels:

  • Level 1: Technicians who carry out tests under supervision, follow written instructions and record results.
  • Level 2: Personnel qualified to perform and supervise inspections, select techniques, calibrate equipment, and interpret and evaluate results.
  • Level 3: Experts responsible for developing procedures, interpreting standards and codes, and overseeing NDT programmes and personnel.

The webinar outlined the essential stages of certification, including training, industrial experience, examination, certification and renewal.

The session also covered the training and experience requirements for UT and Ultrasonic Testing Thickness Measurement (UTTM), alongside the examination components. These include general and specific theory, practical assessments, and instruction writing.

Supporting Professional Development in NDT

The webinar highlighted the importance of internationally recognised certification in developing competent NDT professionals and supporting quality and safety across industries.

Through its specialist training programmes, TWI SEA continues to support individuals and organisations seeking to strengthen their inspection capabilities and advance their technical expertise.

The session concluded with an overview of TWI SEA’s NDT training opportunities, including its CSWIP Ultrasonic Testing and Ultrasonic Testing Thickness Measurement courses.
