For Isaiah Mawugbe Zuli, quality assurance is more than a profession; it is a responsibility to protect people, assets and the integrity of critical infrastructure. With a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and over six years of experience in the oil and gas industry, Isaiah has built his career by combining scientific knowledge with practical expertise in welding inspection and quality control.

Today, through the CSWIP 3.1 Welding Inspector programme at TWI Middle East & Africa, he is taking the next step towards becoming a globally recognised inspection professional.

Discovering a passion for quality

Isaiah's journey into QA/QC began during his internship at the West African Gas Pipeline Company, where he gained valuable exposure to industrial safety and HSE practices. His passion for quality was further developed during his national service at a welding and fabrication company, where he worked as a QA/QC Assistant and witnessed the critical role that material compliance, welding quality and non-destructive testing play in preventing catastrophic failures.

That experience inspired a long-term career dedicated to maintaining the highest standards across the oil, gas and mining sectors.

Protecting quality across every stage of fabrication

Currently serving as a QA/QC Inspector at Harlequin Oil and Gas, Isaiah is responsible for ensuring compliance with international welding and inspection standards throughout fabrication and construction activities.

His responsibilities include:

• Visual and dimensional welding inspections in accordance with ISO 17637 and AWS D1.1
• Supervising welder training and qualification for GTAW, SMAW, FCAW and SAW processes
• Material inspection, traceability and verification of Material Test Reports (MTRs)
• Fit-up, joint preparation and pre-welding inspections using approved WPS
• Monitoring welding parameters, preheat and inter-pass temperatures
• Witnessing Welder Qualification Tests (WQT) and WPQR activities
• Coordinating destructive and non-destructive testing with third-party inspection agencies
• Monitoring post-weld heat treatment (PWHT)
• Preparing weld logs, NCRs and Manufacturing Record Book (MRB) documentation
• Supporting Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) while promoting a strong site safety culture

These responsibilities require technical accuracy, attention to detail and a thorough understanding of internationally recognised quality standards.

Although Isaiah already possesses extensive field experience and Level 2 NDT certifications in PT, RT and MT, he recognised the importance of formalising his expertise through an internationally respected qualification.

His objective is to bridge his background in chemistry with welding metallurgy, inspection methodology and global engineering standards, enabling him to take on senior QA/QC responsibilities across high-risk industrial projects.

By combining scientific knowledge with certified welding inspection competence, he aims to progress into Senior QA/QC Welding Inspector roles, overseeing critical oil, gas and mining assets while ensuring compliance with international codes and industry best practice.

He also plans to continue his professional journey by pursuing certifications in CSWIP 3.2, Quality Management Systems (QMS), API and NACE, becoming a well-rounded inspection specialist.
