EMPHASIZING Project Shortlisted for Award

Fri, 10 November, 2023

The EMPHASIZING project, of which TWI is a part, has been shortlisted for an award in The Engineer’s 2024 Collaborate to Innovate (C2I) Awards.

The awards, which are now in their eighth year, were created to celebrate technology-led engineering collaboration across a range of disciplines and industry sectors.

The Innovate UK-funded EMPHASIZING project is led by Longworth with TWI joining fellow project partners Brunel Composites Centre: Brunel University London, EMS Chemie, Ford, Gen2Plank and Gestamp UK to investigate enhancing the material properties of recycled glass fibre composite materials.

The material properties and light weight of composite materials have seen them revolutionise a range of different industries, but this has led to the creation of millions of tonnes of glass reinforced plastic (GFRP) waste.

Much of this GFRP waste is either incinerated or sent to landfill so, to address this, the EMPHASIZING team are working on solutions to recycle GFRP materials from automotive, marine and wind turbine parts to fabricate new parts for the automotive industry.

The desired outcome is to identify use cases for the upcycled GFRP materials to deliver a low cost, readily available and sustainable source of composites.

We are delighted to have been recognised through shortlisting in the ‘Wild Card’ category of the C2I Awards.

All of the shortlisted entries will be judged by a panel of UK engineers, with the winners due to be announced at a special awards party on Thursday 29th February 2024 at 1 Great George Street, London.
