What we do

TWI provides engineering consultancy services to its Members and stakeholders, delivering authoritative and impartial expert advice, knowhow and safety assurance related to engineering, materials and joining technologies.

We can provide you with an integrated approach to joining, inspection and material implementation for your products, embracing everything from research and development, specification and prototyping, to commissioning and installation.

Descended from the British Welding Research Association (BWRA), TWI has decades of heritage and has grown into one of the world's foremost independent research and technology organisations.

This independent nature allows us to offer truly impartial advice to our Members to support their aims and innovate to solve challenges.

This innovation is built upon our track record of original thinking and invention that has seen us deliver significant innovations to industry, including the invention of friction stir welding, the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) test for measuring fracture toughness, and laser cutting technologies for steels.

While we remain at the forefront of these technologies, more recent innovations include functional metal coatings for composites, non-destructive testing techniques for composites and polymer pipes, and long life electron sources for additive manufacturing.
