Non-Destructive Inspection of Aerospace Components

NDI of metallic and composite aerospace components requires a vast array of techniques, including X-ray (including digital and computed tomography), ultrasonics (including phased array), infrared thermography and laser shearography.

The aerospace industry is increasing the use of composites in airframe and aircraft engine blade manufacture, and this puts demands on the techniques to inspect for discontinuities.

TWI is well placed to support the industry with the wide range of techniques and experience as its disposal in Cambridge and Port Talbot.

TWI was chosen as the host for the NDT Validation Centre in Port Talbot, to support the National Composites Network, based on its expertise and equipment at the Port Talbot facility. Several single client and collaborative projects have been carried out for customers to solve problems and develop NDI techniques towards future commercial use.

TWI is leading the large INTACOM inspection of composites project, to support three large UK manufacturing organisations (Rolls-Royce, GKN Aerospace and the RNLI).
