Bayou Holdco: Working Together to Provide Pipeline Solutions

Bayou Holdco's Ismael Brito dos Santos details how TWI helped with polymer pipe testing

01

Bayou Holdco has been working with TWI since 2018, following a recommendation from one of their customers.

Having provided high-quality pipe coating products and services to the oil and gas industry for over 75 years, Bayou sought TWI’s testing expertise to assess a new five-layer polypropylene pipe insulation for subsea applications. TWI worked to evaluate the physical and mechanical performance of the pipes in accordance with BS EN ISO 12736:2014.

Bayou Holdco (known in the industry as Bayou) has been providing leading pipe coating products and services to the Oil & Gas industry for over 75 years. Bayou, began as a one-man, one welding truck operation in 1942, and has grown to the company that it is today by still providing the same quality and value that it has since the beginning.

Bayou offers a complete line of coating and insulation products, including anti-corrosion, negative buoyancy, and deepwater flow assurance coating.   Bayou also offers in-house and third-party support services such as multi-joint welding, field-joint coating, end boring & beveling, pipe bends, anode and buckle arrestor installation, plus other services such as transportation and inspection.  Bayou’s campus sits in the Port of Iberia in Louisiana with 300 acres of pipe storage, as well as 6000 ft of quayside that can accommodate multiple barge loading/unloading sites.  The facility has direct access to the Intracoastal waterway and Gulf of Mexico, also has onsite truck and rail access

Meeting the needs of onshore, offshore and deepwater projects, Bayou has always ensured that their products meet the required standards, while TWI’s expertise and years of experience help to contribute to their quality goal. Bayou became a TWI Member company in order to have this work completed.

Bayou’s Quality Manager Ismael Brito dos Santos noted that TWI helped to “provide options to meet the criteria and technical nuances” to deliver data that is relevant to Bayou’s needs.

Assessing the needs of Bayou, TWI was able to determine the best testing methods to gauge the capabilities of the five-layer polymer pipe.

The physical and mechanical properties of the polypropylene pipes included immersion type ageing tests and the associated characterisation as well as a comparison to synactic polypropylene layers.

Alongside the material characterisation, the pipes were also subjected to mechanical, chemical and thermal analysis.

Having undertaken a range of tests, TWI was able to provide comprehensive results to Bayou who were, in turn, able to reassure their own clients of the suitability of the pipe for their intended applications.

Bringing together technical innovation and product development, TWI supported Bayou to characterise and qualify different products.

Ismael Brito dos Santos explained that TWI “offered perspective, technically, and options for services and testing that allow us to take our idea and critique it and improve it.”

Following the success of this first project, Bayou have already commissioned TWI to deliver more testing going forward into the future.
