Fume Mechanisms

Project Code: 0903-04

Objectives

Establish the relationship between fume formation and metal transfer modes in MIG/MAG welding.

Propose techniques to minimise emission of fume, based on control of metal transfer mode.

Project Outline

A series of experiments will be carried out to investigate fume emissions from different metal transfer modes for MIG/MAG welding. Welding parameters will be varied with the intention of generating different levels of fume.

Video based techniques coupled with high speed data acquisition will be used to characterise metal transfer modes and these measurements will be correlated to fume formation rate measurements.

The data generated will be analysed to assess the effect of welding parameters and metal transfer modes on fume generation.

Relevant Industry Sectors

All industries and will have a potential impact on all fabricators.

Technical and Economic Benefits

A better understanding of fume formation mechanisms.

Assistance with development of new products.

A cleaner and safer working environment.
