Obtaining a copy of a standard

Frequently Asked Questions

Purchasing

UK customers can buy British or other countries' standards directly from the British Standards Institution (BSI) without having a BSI account. Customers from outside the UK are advised to obtain copies of standards through their own National Standards Body. Although it is not the recommended method, non-UK customers can also buy British or other countries' standards directly from BSI without having an account.

BSI is not an agent for all standards producers so other independent standards suppliers to consider are ILI and IHS.

Borrowing

British Standards are not available for loan, but many categories of overseas standard are. To borrow from BSI users must have a BSI account.

Online Access

Many standards are now available online. The relevant standards producing bodies can provide more information on how to access them. They may be available by paying an annual subscription to a database, but it is also possible to purchase many on an individual basis, usually with a credit card. Some may even be free.

Cost

The cost of standards varies and it is necessary to consult the suppliers directly. Postage may be extra on standards delivered in hard copy.
