Experts set to gather at NSIRC Annual Conference 2018

Keynote speakers from industry and academia are set to join over 50 postgraduate students presenting their PhD research at the 2018 Annual NSIRC Conference. 

The National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC) is a state-of-the-art postgraduate engineering facility established and managed by structural integrity specialist TWI offering PhD and MSc programmes. 

The two-day annual gathering, which will take place on 3 and 4 July at the Granta Centre, TWI’s on-site conference centre, provides an opportunity for NSIRC students to present and disseminate their research to an audience of fellow PhD colleagues, as well academics and partners from industry. First-year students will take part in a poster session.

Topics covered by the students will include subjects ranging from advanced materials/ coatings, novel joining methods, innovative monitoring technologies, data analytics, robotics, to advancing non-destructive testing (NDT) methods and many more. 

Joining the students will be speakers from industry and academia including:

  • Graham Hopkins - Group Safety, Technical & Engineering Director at Network Rail 
  • Michael Fitzpatrick - Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Coventry University, Non-Executive Director at  Diamond Light Source 
  • Robert Quarshie - Head of Materials & Nanotechnology at the Knowledge Transfer Network

About NSIRC

NSIRC, a state-of-the-art research facility based in Cambridge, UK, was established to collaborate with leading universities around the world to deliver industry-inspired research through PhD and MSc programmes. 

The initiative was jointly funded by the Regional Growth Fund (RGF), the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and by industry. The founder sponsors of NSIRC are the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, BP and TWI. The objectives of the initiative are to address the following:

  • Build and operate state-of-the-art facilities for research, development and testing
  • Translate research and development into industrial products and systems
  • Generate qualified researchers and engineers
