Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week at TWI

Tue, 13 March, 2018

Last week saw National Apprenticeship Week celebrated in UK. The week provided an opportunity for employers and apprentices to come together to celebrate the success of apprenticeships whilst encouraging people to choose apprenticeships as a pathway to a great career.

TWI currently has apprentices working across the organisation in areas including software design, corrosion, arcs welding and more, developing both skills and self-belief to succeed in their chosen field.

Jordan Hollingsworth joined as an apprentice software designer in October after deciding that university was not for him. Keen to get straight into work (while avoiding the debt associated with university), Jordan chose TWI as a big company who also happened to be located close to his home. Jordan hopes that his apprenticeship will lead to full-time employment with TWI.

While Jordan has chosen to work close to home, another of our apprentices, Catherine Leahy has travelled much further. Moving from Liverpool to Cambridge after her A-levels, Catherine wanted to combine studying for her BTech in Mechanical Engineering with gaining real-world employment experience.

Elsewhere, Bethany Richards has found a placement in our chemical and analytical labs, having decided that A-levels were not for her after her first year. Like Catherine, Bethany noted how she enjoys not having to do homework, as she did with her A-levels, although she plans to stay up with her studies by completing a foundation degree while at TWI.

Bethany and Catherine have noted how they have been welcomed by the staff at TWI, and have not felt at all intimidated stepping into a traditionally male-dominated environment.

Meanwhile, Alec McIntyre decided to take up a four-year apprenticeship with TWI, as he knew of us as a large company with great opportunities to progress. Living close to TWI’s HQ near Cambridge, Alec came to us following an engineering course at Cambridge Regional College and says that he just plans on working hard and seeing where the opportunity takes him.

Jordan, Catherine, Bethany, and Alec are also joined by fellow apprentices Connor Brookfield, Tyler Thurgood and Efan Jones, and we wish them all the best as they embark on their careers with TWI.

TWI will be offering six new exciting apprentice technician opportunities shortly. Keep an eye on the careers section on our website for more information.
