For organisation operating in-house certification schemes such as SNT-TC-1A, NAS 410 and EN4179, TWI's team of Level III qualified staff can assist with operations such as:

  • preparation of company written practices
  • compilation and approval instructions and procedures
  • training of staff in accordance with the specific requirements of the organisation
  • audit of inspection operations

Eddy current inspection

The application of low and high frequency testing, amplitude and phase-sensitive methods for:

  • the detection of cracks, surface and near-surface, in aircraft components, structures, tubes and welds
  • the detection of corrosion and thinning in non-magnetic materials
  • the grading and sorting of materials on the basis of conductivity and permeability

Welder training

TIG welding of ferrous and non-ferrous materials for aerospace applications to coincide with CAA BCAR A8-10 Supplement welder approval Figs 1, 2 & 3.

Visual inspection of aerospace welds

Visual inspection procedures; relevant codes of practice, terms and definitions; welding processes and typical welding defects; weld measurements; typical documentation and requirements; practical inspection and reporting to:

  • identify various weld imperfections (defects)
  • understand the relevant welding technology related to visual inspection
  • understand the need for documentation in welding
  • be aware of codes and standards related to inspection requirements
  • carry out inspection of parent materials and consumables
  • carry out visual inspection of welds, report on them and assess their compliance with specified acceptance criteria

Practical ultrasonic inspection of composite materials

This course provides:

  • a background knowledge of the properties of composite materials
  • manufacturing methods involved in their construction
  • type of defects likely to occur during manufacture and in-service
  • introduction to the range of techniques employed in composite inspection and experience applying these techniques to typical defect samples

Aerospace materials and their behaviour

  • Materials properties and grades of aerospace metals, alloys and composites
  • Basic metallurgy of aluminium, titanium, nickel, stainless steel and other steel alloys
  • Alloying and its influence on mechanical properties and weldability
  • Heat treatable and non-treatable alloys
  • Metallurgical effects of welding
  • Filler metal composition and selection
  • Welding processes, techniques and precautions
  • Manufacturing methods involved in the construction of composites
  • Basic metallurgy of aluminium, titanium, nickel, stainless steel and other steel alloys

Refresher training for aerospace technicians

This training has been structured to allow staff to remain up-to-date with latest developments within the NDT field and to satisfy the requirements of airworthiness documents and schemes such as EN 4179.
