TWI represented at Armourers’ Alumni Company Reception

Fri, 08 February, 2019

TWI was represented at this year’s Armourers’ Alumni Company Reception at the Armourers’ Hall in London on 4 February 2019.

The Welding Institute works in partnership with the Armourers and Brasiers Trust on the TWI Materials Science Partnership, with awards held each year to support and champion excellence and endeavour in the fields of education and research in materials science and metallurgy.

The awards are designed to stimulate interest and raise the profile of materials science and metallurgy with a view to engaging young people and promoting the industry. The awards include three academic awards for young scientists - Final year PhD student, Best BEng/BSc student and Best MSc student – as well as a STEM ambassador award to recognise a significant voluntary contribution to the STEM Ambassador Programme in the field of materials joining and structural integrity. In addition, there are a number of travel awards supporting postgraduate students undertaking studies in materials joining and structural integrity, so they can attend an international conference relevant to their studies.

These awards are presented at The Welding Institute’s Annual Awards Dinner and the winners automatically gain alumni status to the Armourers and Brasiers Trust. The alumni status not only provides networking opportunities but also allows entrance to the annual Armourers’ Alumni Company Reception.

This year’s reception saw TWI Project Leader in Materials Performance and Ferrous Alloys, Dorothy Winful, give a presentation on high temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA). Her talk investigated how recent incidents of HTHA at refineries, petrochemical and other chemical facilities have brought into question the current methods for assessing the susceptibility of carbon / low alloy steels to HTHA.

While Dorothy’s talk was not voted as one of the evening’s winning speeches, she was commended for her excellent talk, which was delivered with both confidence and clarity.

Speaking on the event, Dorothy said, “The Armourers’ Hall in London is quite a spectacular venue. The event was a great opportunity to inform others on the issues and ongoing work related to high temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA), as well as meet members and fellow recipients of the Armourers and Brasiers awards.”
