Project Launched To Develop Nuclear Waste Disposal Canisters

Mon, 04 February, 2019

TWI are embarking on a new project to continue developing a design for nuclear waste disposal canisters. Building on work that was originally commissioned in 2010, TWI will work on behalf of the Swiss National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste, Nagra (www.nagra.ch), who are responsible for the safe disposal of all types of radioactive waste produced in Switzerland.

In the longer term, Nagra are planning to build a deep geological repository for the final disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SF) and high-level waste (HLW).  The canister designs need to use materials with proven fabrication and long-term performance properties capable of providing a 10,000-year lifetime without breach of containment.

Having already completed a project to provide an initial canister design, TWI are now set to provide further developments to demonstrate feasibility of materials choices and concepts that will provide evidence that long-term and operational safety requirements can be assured.

TWI has now begun phase 1 of 4 to re-evaluate the canister design.
